Basic Safety Tips against Computer Viruses
One of the great nemeses of the computer technology is the virus, regardless of what type it is. The whole world remembers with dread the advent of the “I Love You” virus at the turn of the millennium, for how it destroyed files by changing their extension names. And up to date, it is considered as the worst virus attack that ever happened to the computer generation. It’s even safe to say that most, if not all, computer users around the world have experienced the tragic consequences of having one’s computer infected by a particular virus.
So here are basic safety tips to ward off unwanted viruses from inhabiting our computers, laptops or even mobile phones.
Install anti-virus software. Most often than not, your licensed operating system software already has its built-in anti-virus operation. This makes your OS virus-ready and armed. Hence it’s always advisable to procure licensed products. If the built-in anti-virus doesn’t suit your needs, you can always purchase established and recognized anti-virus software.
Exercise extra care in downloading from unauthorized or free web pages. You can keep in mind that everything offered free in this world either has a catch or is destructive. It is especially suspicious when offered online.
Along with this, exercise caution in opening spam electronic mails. Usually, these emails would offer invitations to suspicious sites, which could either be harmful to the end-user, to the computer, or to both. Harmful viruses usually come from unrecognized websites. When this infects your unit, you will be pained to find that the only computer repair necessary is reformatting the whole thing. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Moreover, be sure to set up your firewall command in place. The firewall settings will enable your computer to quickly spot suspicious plug-ins and websites, so that it makes the necessary notification and keeps you aware.
Be careful in using USB flash disks in public Internet cafes as well. Most cases of virus infections have been taken from these public users. You don’t really know what type of virus that someone may have brought to that computer unit you’re using. If you must need to use the public Internet depots, be sure to check if their units have installed deep freeze so that you can be assured that the unit did go back to its default, virus-free settings before you use it.
Finally, don’t panic. These viruses don’t kill a person, although they will do great harm to your files or unit, unfortunately. Still, panicking will not help you think of a wise decision for the computer repair necessary. It’s important to remember that these viruses can’t even pinch our skin, and that there is always a cure for every virus attack. After all, a reformat command is still a cure, if all else fails. It’s better than having an unusable computer altogether.
