Supernumerary Teeth, Mesiodens, Hyperdontia

The supernumerary teeth are most commonly located in the lower jaw around the incisors. They are the reason for the extra teeth crowding and the plaque retention. It really depends on the location of the teeth but most of the times the treatment is well known. Before you take that step you need a consultation with an oral surgeon. If everything is under control you have to extract the supernumerary tooth. If the extra tooth is located between the upper front incisors it is known as a mesiodens. The supernumerary teeth can have different shape, color and size. The mesiodens is usually cone-shaped and can be located on the lingual or the vestibular side of the upper front incisors. After the extraction the aesthetics of the smile can be restored by several methods. You can restore it with porcelain or zirconium veneers, crowns or dental composite. Either way is right and the choice could be made according to the particular case.

The reason for the eruption of the supernumerary teeth in one's mouth has not yet been established completely. There are several different theories that try to explain the presence of the extra teeth. One of the theory says that this is a consequence of division of the tooth bud. That condition could be caused by a dental lamina hyperactivity. The dental lamina is a dental structure that gives birth to all of the teeth in the mouth (no matter permanent or deciduous teeth). The presence of a single supernumerary tooth is more common but the occurrence of multiple extra teeth is also possible. 

The supernumerary teeth can be classified into several different groups based on their shape and location in the mouth. If we take for consideration the morphology four types can be found. They are conical, tuberculate, supplemental and odontoma. There is also another classification - by its location. The extra teeth can be located at the front area and at the distal area. Either way they disturb the normal occlusion, hygiene and outlook of the patient.

The treatment of the extra teeth depends upon the type and location. There are several conditions when a supernumerary tooth has to be extracted - If there is a disposition or inclination of the central incisors caused by the eruption of a supernumerary, if the eruption of central incisor is delayed, if there is a teeth crowding in area caused by a lack of place
