Varadero Beach located on the north coast of Cuba is often described as the ‘most beautiful beach in the world.’ Founded in 1870, Varadero beach was known to be the favoured holiday spot of luminaries like American millionaire, Irenee DuPont and mafia don, Al Capone.
Varadero Beach which is still relatively low profile for a ‘fun in the sun’ destination seems to have escaped the rampant commercialisation that characterises many other destinations in the Caribbean. This is largely due to the fact that it hasn’t yet been discovered by the United States for more than fifty years. However the Canadians and Europeans have been patronising Varadero Beach for decades and are well aware of its many charms.
Situated on the long, narrow, Hicacos Peninsula, near the confluence of the of the Straits of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean, and located 140 km east of Havana, Varadero Beach and the town of Varadero are renowned for their scenic beauty, live coral reefs and the ample opportunities they offer for scuba diving and deep- sea fishing. Varadero Beach extends over 20 kilometres (12 miles) and features fine, white sand beachfront enveloped by the turquoise waters of the Gulf Stream. It is no wonder then that Varadero Beach is often referred to as ‘Playa Azul’ or the Blue Beach.
Varadero is served by its own international airport though most tourists on Cuba holidays tend to combine cultural excursions in Cuba’s capital city, Havana with some beachside downtime in Varadero. Luckily for them, Varadero Beach is an all-year-round destination which can be visited at any time of the year for it is estimated that it experiences more than 320 sunny days a year.
Moreover Varadero Beach is a family-friendly destination which has much to offer for travellers of all ages. Shallow warm waters favourable for safe swimming for even the youngest of toddlers, cafes, restaurants, parks and museums are just some of its many entertainment options. Additionally there are several other attractions located in the vicinity of Varadero Beach in case you want a respite from the beach and these include the Delfianrio or the dolphin pool at Carretera Las Morlas, located 13 kilometres away and the serene beauty of Hicacos Point Natural Park, part of an ecological reserve which is dotted with caves and home to many wondrous animals and birds.
